HBJ MATCH REPORT RD 6 | Canterbury Magicians v Northern Districts

Round 6 of the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield was a much anticipated day/nighter at Bay Oval. Following the disappointment of the day before when we fought hard and got so close, the Magicians were looking forward to an opportunity to front up again against Northern Districts.

On this occasion Northern Districts won the toss and elected to bat first, making best use of the daylight hours and fast outfield. There was one change in the Magicians line-up, with Yssa Cullen (LPW) making her debut, replacing Bo Lynch and being charged with taking the new ball.

The Magicians got off to the perfect start with an early wicket to Clayton, before Cullen got took her first wicket in the 6th over with a exceptional catch behind the wickets from Laura Hughes, diving full stretch to her right. Following this the bowlers kept the run rate under control but found it difficult to make inroads, with a defining 128 run partnership being formed.

Cullen provided the breakthrough in the 30th over, before striking again followed by a catch off Frnakie Mackay’s bowling which saw 6 wickets fall in regular succession before Northern’s innings closed at 260/8. The pick of the bowlers being Cullen (3/38) and Mackay (3/45).

With 261 needed for the win, it was vital the Magicians got off to a good start, which they did with Mackay and Abigale Gerken putting on 70 for the first wicket inside the first 15 overs, before Mackay was dismissed for 32 (43 balls), before two further wickets fell as the score ticked over 100, with Gerken 39 (63 balls) and Sharpe being dismissed.

A partnership of substance was required and while Jacinta Savage 52 (64 balls) and Natalie Cox 37 (52 balls) were together it looked likely, however after the 70 run partnership was broken with the score at 171 the final 6 wickets fell quickly, with the Magicians dismissed for 200 in the 44th over and a loss by 60 runs.
