Brian McCrorie 1939 – 2023 Obituary

Brian Andrew McCrorie

25 October 1939 – 15 November 2023

Brian’s early years saw him educated at St Bede’s College after which he entered university where he graduated as a Chartered accountant.

He continued his sporting passion by joining the Marist Cricket Club and the Marist Rugby Club.

In the summer months, he played for Marist’s top cricket side which was in the 2nd Grade. From that level, he played many years for Marist Presidents team as a slow right-arm off-spinner. He continued his social cricket by playing at Golden Oldies tournaments in the UK and West Indies.

However, Brian left an indelible mark on the game in Canterbury in sports administration. In club land, he served as club treasurer for his cricket club and served as club auditor for various other clubs and codes, including bowls, rugby and cricket.

Other passions included rugby and horse racing.

Brian served on the Canterbury Cricket Association’s Management Committee as the Marist CC delegate. His contribution started in the 1978-79 season and he served on various sub-committees including finance, Hagley Sports Centre, Match, Competitions and Club of which he was convenor.

The Canterbury Cricket Association changed its management structure to a leaner model in 1990. He served on the Board of Control from 1990-91 to 1994-95. Advisory Groups replaced the former sub-committees and Brian served on the Club Cricket Advisory Group until 1996-97 when he retired from cricket administration at this level. At the 1997-98 AGM, Brian was made an Honorary Member of the Association.
