Since 1877, the Canterbury Cricket Association has been at the heart of cricket in Canterbury. We make it easy for players, clubs, and communities to enjoy and grow the game they love, from grassroots juniors to senior competitions. Guided by a passionate Board of Directors and led day-to-day by our Senior Leadership Team, we’re committed to creating opportunities, supporting growth, and ensuring cricket thrives for everyone in Canterbury.

Timeline: History of our organisation

1851

Cricket arrives with European settlers, and the first game is played at Hagley Oval.

1869

First Officially Recorded Game: Canterbury take on Otago outside the Canterbury Cricket Umpire Association Pavillion (New Zealand’s oldest sports building).

1877

Canterbury Cricket Association Formed: Our organisation is officially established with a vision the be the leaders of cricket in Canterbury.

1929

New Zealand’s First Test: Canterbury hold the first test match for both the region and the country against England.

1932

Canterbury Magicians First Game: Canterbury Magicians play their first match against Otago, winning by 5 runs.

1992

Cricket World Cup: Australia and New Zealand co-host the Cricket World cup. Pakistan become World Cup Champions for the very first time.

2015

Cricket World Cup: Australia and New Zealand partner co-host again at Hagley Oval, with 20,000 fans in attendance.

2022

ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Final: Hagley Oval hits the world stage again, hosting 5 matches of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

2022

Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre Opens: Christchurch’s first indoor cricket facility opens its doors for the first time, ensuring the development of future generations of cricketers throughout the region.
