Canterbury Cricket have announced the first round of 14 contracted players.  Canterbury have put some encouraging performances together over the past few seasons and has retained 11 of the originally contracted 14 first round offers from the 2016-17 season.  A highlight of the contract list is again, the young nature of the squad with an average age of 24 years which includes the three centrally contracted NZ players – Tom Latham, Matt Henry and Henry Nicholls.

There are three players contracted on Canterbury’s list for the first time – Chad Bowes (NZ qualifying player), Michael Pollard (transferred from Wellington) and Jack Boyle (Canterbury Country).  Bowes and Boyle have been part of the Canterbury set-up previously while Pollard will no doubt add some power and dynamic potential to the batting line-up.

Fulton retired after the end of the 2016-17 season and Logan van Beek has decided to make the move to Wellington.

Director of Cricket and Head Coach, Gary Stead, said “this is a very exciting contract list in terms of both talent and potential.  Our challenge will be to grow on our performances from last season and I believe we have the right bunch of players to step up into positions of leadership and performance.

We will look to Ellis and Astle, two of Canterbury’s consistent all-rounders to provide the experience to the group but there is a great opportunity for others to make their mark on this team and the competitions.

We have shown a willingness and philosophy of focusing on developing talent from within Canterbury programmes and we will continue to do this while ensuring we have a balanced contract list”.
